These Are the Four Ways I Track New Movie and TV Show Releases (2024)

With a constant stream of new movies and TV shows being released weekly across various platforms and in theaters, it's easy to lose track of upcoming releases. Here are four ways that have made it easier for me to stay updated on future releases, and hopefully, these will be useful for you too!

1 IMDb

If you're unfamiliar with IMDb (the Internet Movie Database), it's one of the best and most comprehensive online entertainment-related resources out there by far. On IMDb, you can easily navigate the database to find loads of information about movies, television productions, and entertainment industry professionals. IMDb was one of the first ways I tracked new movies and TV shows, and it quickly became my main source for my entertainment-related queries.

I use IMDb for a few specific reasons:

1. The Release Calendar includes theatrical, streaming, and TV premieres in various countries (including the United States, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, etc.).
2. There are specific dates for releases, short promotional videos, and official trailers available.
3. There's detailed information provided for the majority of the upcoming releases, including pre-released ratings and user/critic reviews by those who have seen advanced screenings.
4. Additional information is present, such as the cast lists containing detailed information about individuals on-screen and behind the scenes.

How Does IMDb Work?

Using IMDb is simple. Here are three steps to start tracking upcoming releases with or without an IMDb/IMDb Pro account:

1. Visit IMDb in your browser, or download the IMDb for iOS/iPadOS or Android.
2. Select the menu icon.
3. Select the Release Calendar underneath the Movies section.

From here, you can start tracking new releases.

My all-time favorite aspect of Metacritic is that this resource aggregates reviews from leading critics across a wide range of entertainment topics, such as music, TV shows, movies, games, and more. Metacritic is a unique tool if you’re seeking upcoming releases and aiming to gather various viewpoints about engaging with specific entertainment media or not. While it may seem daunting to navigate this resource, there are ways to make the most of your experience with Metacritic. This entertainment aggregator provides summary scores known as Metascores, calculated by averaging ratings from professional critics and publications.

How Does Metacritic Work?

Similar to IMDb, you can track upcoming movie and TV releases with or without a free registered account. Follow these two easy steps to start tracking:

1. Visit Metacritic and select the Menu icon.
2. Locate the Movies or TV Shows sections and select the New Movies in Theaters or New TV Shows.
3. Then, you can adjust your filters to focus on what you're looking for. For example, you can narrow down your search by locating upcoming releases by metascore, platform (such as Netflix, Max, Starz, Paramount+, or Hulu), or genre in theaters.

Metacritic's metascores and lists of top-rated upcoming releases streamline the process of finding promising entertainment options across different genres. Despite their metascore, everyone has unique entertainment preferences—take scores with a grain of salt and support various works whenever possible.

3 Letterboxd

If you're eager to delve into film culture by exploring, discussing, and sharing your cinematic experiences, Letterboxd is an excellent platform to do so. Similar to IMDb, you can rate, review, and keep a personal diary of entertainment you have watched. However, Letterboxd is different in that it serves as a social network for film lovers on iOS and Android. If you want to discover new films and delve deeper into your movie-watching experience, Letterboxd is easily accessible and caters to a diverse community of film lovers.

How Does Letterboxd Work?

Here are three simple steps to track thousands of upcoming movie releases with or without an account:

1. Visit Letterboxd in your browser or download the Letterboxd app for iOS/iPadOS/Apple TV or Android.
2. In your browser, select Films to be redirected to the films page where you can narrow down your search. Scroll down to the options bar for browsing films (e.g., year, rating, popular, genre, service, and other). Hover your mouse over Other and then proceed to select either Most Anticipated or Opening Soon.
3. On an iOS or Android mobile device, select the menu icon. Then, proceed to select Films. Once you're on the browsing film page, select Other to view the Most Anticipated or Opening Soon options.

I found this particular option to be more complex than the others, and the site itself isn't as easy to navigate compared to IMDb, Metacritic, and the AMC Theatres app. Nevertheless, you can use these six tips to make the most of the Letterboxd network.

4 AMC Theatres App

The AMC Theatres app, a mobile application, allows you to explore movie showtimes, purchase tickets, and find AMC theatre locations. Outside these functions, I use this app to track upcoming movies in a quick and accessible manner. While the AMC Theatres app is incredibly convenient, the other options offer more detailed information about the content.

How to Download the AMC Theatres App

Downloading the AMC Theatres App is simple. Here are two quick steps to viewing upcoming movies:

1. Download the AMC Theatres: Movies & More app for iOS or Android.
2. Launch the AMC Theatres app and select the Coming Soon tab.

Overall, IMDb is my go-to for exploring and tracking upcoming releases, while the AMC app is the most convenient to access and navigate. Metacritic expands beyond movies and TV shows, which interests me, and Letterboxd provides insightful reviews.
